Re: Araucaria heterophylla

Hi Barry & all,
When driving up and down California one can tell all the old farms by the
Norfolk Island Pine and the Canary Island Palm planted on each side of the
front walk leading to the front door. Many farmers were so delighted to be
farming where they didn't have to shovel snow in winter, and this planting
was a symbol of how they felt. John Muir's house in Martinez, CA has a
Canary Island Palm. Wilshire's hunting lodge in Placentia, CA (no longer
in existence) had one of each! Also a sign of old farms, even one or two
left in Berkeley, CA, is the tank house-a kind of farm tractor garage on
the bottom and a tank for water on the top. Often this was filled with one
of the wind-driven water pumps, still often seen.
