wisterias

This is the time of year for wisterias. So I was wondering if anyone can
advise on the most reliable method of getting a wisteria to bloom without
the leaves appearing together with flowers. Does hard pruning guarantee it?
Does the type or species make it more likely. Is age an issue? I have tried
many tacks on this one and have not yet found a reliable answer.

One plant I have, a Wisteria floribunda always flowers before the leaves
show. The other, W. sinensis does not. Both are pruned annually. Both are
in sun, both are about ten years in the ground. You might say that it is
the different species. Yet I can point out lots of W. sinensis that flower
magnificently before the first green shoot appears. Oh yes, both are
purple.
