Having grown up in the California coastal mountains, I can add the
following observations to Barry's description of the californica
buckeye (aesculus (sp.?) californica:
In their native habitat they usually grow under canopy, often on the
banks of seasonal streams. They are usually multi-trunked and
spreading. The shiny, mahogany "buckeyes" themselves can easily be pried
out of their green, leathery husks, leaving a very bitter residue on one's hands.
