Buckeyes

Hello everyone,

Thanks to all for your comments on buckeyes -- most interesting. The
early deciduous feature of the California plant is paralleled in SE
Missouri, where the red buckeyes' leaves turn yellowish brown and start
to fall in August, well before the other shrubs and trees. Even the
regular horse chestnut in Europe looks decidedly tatty by mid September.
Aesculus hippocastanum is a widely planted park tree in the U.K., and
I've seen it very effectively used as a street tree on the Greek island
of Corfu, so it can tolerate a range of conditions from relatively cool
Atlantic to Mediterranean.

If I ever had the space, I'd love to plant a collection of buckeyes, with
each of the 13 species together.

Incidentally, I've heard that the milky latex sap of certain shrubby
Euphorbia species have been used as fish poison, e.g. E. dendroides from
the Mediterranean basin. The similar E. piscatoria from the N. Atlantic
Islands sounds from its name as if it might have had a similar use.

Nick.
