With the recent mention of the genus Cassia vs. Senna, I thought
I'd ask about a species new to me - Cassia phyllodinea. I found
the plant at a local chain nursery, who apparently is a clearing
house for all sorts of strange 'left-over' plants brokered not
doubt due to lack of interest or response. I have never seen this
shrub and I find it quite attractive. Sort of like a denser and
softer looking version of C. artemisiodes, which can look rather
sad in this area. I was able to find a fair picture of it at:
http://ag.arizona.edu/classes/lar520/unit6/cassphyl.htm though the
specimens I saw seemed more gray than this photo. The small,
'egg-yolk' yellow flowers were sprinkled through the narrow leaves
creating an interesting close-up effect. I'd like to use this
plant in full sun, on heavy clay soil in a dry garden. The foliage
will have a background of the same yellow as the flowers, and I may
plant Vitex angus-castus, the Chaste Tree, close at hand (lots of
sirh blue spikes in the heat of summer).
Anyone have some experiences with Cassia phyllodinea?
Thanks in advance,
Sean O.
