Damien, Atriplex halimus is a real toughie and given a bit of help for
the first few months so that the young plants don't dry out
completely, they should run up in no time at all. It is widely
planted and naturalised on coastal cliff tops in the south of the UK
at least and seems to withstand the most severe exposure. Once your
plants have had a chance to send their roots down, they will make good
headway and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they manage to hit well
over 3ft by the end of the year. Growth rates will be largely
regulated by the amount of water available to them initially, so extra
watering where possible will go a long way towards getting them up to
size. Pinching out the shoot tips a couple of times at first will
promote basal branching and help produce strong, bushy plants.
