Admittedly, I've never met a salvia I didn't like. (Well, maybe one or two). For hues in the magenta range, you may wish to try Salvia chiapensis. I have seen two plants labeled as such, one with larger leaves and overall size (about 30" x 30") and a smaller version I have grown that remained tidy at about 18" x 18". I presume this garden-worthy salvia hails from Chiapas, Mexico. It does not have any unruly habits and mounds nicely with a frequent casting of blooms through spring and summer. I purchased it from Jim Duggan at Encinitas Gardens, Encinitas, California. (I've not seen it in catalogs). He may be able to steer you to a wholesaler. Anyone have suggestions for medit salvias in the magenta end of the spectrum? Thanks. Deb Ferber
