Well, I have some of them growing, and I have observed (also elsewhere) that
if their main central shoot is damaged - mine have all been chomped by snails!
but you could prune it - they seem to stop growing upwards, so it seems fairly
easy to keep the height down. I suggest you cut off  the growing point at
about 2 or 3 metres, when it should grow mostly  out instead. One down the
road from me has stayed at about 3 metres for as long as I have known it.

Thanks for the confirmation, Olwen. I can't see that a tropical rainforest
tree would be likely to grow in the wild in N.Z., either.
