Re: Hardiness of Several Subtropical Plants

Dear Michael,
Thanks for giving me the info on the Heliconias and
Tibouchina lepidota 'Alstonville'. Did you get your
Tibouchina from Michael Kartuz, or is it available
here in northern California? I am thinking of trying
it, but have also lost the several other species of
Tibuochina which I have tried to grow previously. I
agree with you that H. latispatha is not very
spectacular as far as Heliconia blooms go, but I like
the look of the plant as background tropical filler,
and it does bloom reliably for me. I am hoping that I
do get some bloom from the other varieties this fall,
to satisfy my curiousity. I have a new found
appreciation for the Heliconias after visiting my
friend's garden, Mushlim Musa, in Malaysia, who is on
the board of the International Heliconia Society and
is probably growing over 200 varieties of them in his
garden, the slides I took came out great!
Hope that all is well with you, and will maybe see you
at the next Cal Hort Meeting in September? (If not
before...) The garden is keeping me busy with trying
to play catchup on 10 months of deferred cleanup and
pruning, but I was greatly relieved that Ernie was
able to keep most everything alive and well!
The H. x Norrie's Garden is a new one to me, is it a
summer or fall bloomer, and what color? Does it get
as rank as H. flavescens, coronarium and gardnerianum,
or is it more restrained, and finally, who which
grower is selling it?
Take care, David
