Barry, I see that this one has been around for a while but the
albizia you ask about is native to my neck of the woods here in SW
Western Australia. The taxonomists have been at work, hence my
confusion.........it is now called Albizia [with one z] lophantha,
syn.Paraserianthes lophantha....................don't you just love
it? It is a small shrub like tree up to 8m with cream flowers in winter.
Very fast growing, but short lived, like many wattles. Not as adapted to
drought as many wattles, so may not have such high weed potential in
dryer areas, but it has become weedy in S Africa.
Now
I know what you're talking about.
Stay
right away from it. Becomes weedy in SA is one hell of an understatement.
Its one of our worst noxious weeds. A great water robber, very quick
growing, very prolific & the seeds appear very longlasting in the soil.
I don't find it attractive either. I can see no reason it wouldn't go the
same way in California.
