lavender clippings for cleaning ponds

Hello all,

   In a recent magazine article I read, there was a passing reference
   to keeping ponds clear by adding straw or lavender clippings in a
   net bag. There was no explanation of why or how that would work.

   Not having any straw handy, I tried this with with my lavender
   trimmings, and lo and behold, my water features are now
   amazingly clear.
   
   The engineer in me needs to know: WHY does this work? Some 
   speculations come to mind, but I'd like to know for sure
   If someone can explain the principle behind this, I sure would
   appreciate it.
