Many thanks to David, Ernie & Jason for the information. The seeds came from
Ventnor Botanic Garden on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight, where I
presume they grow it outside. They're a couple of hundred miles further south
than here, but otherwise in a very similar climatic situation. As I have
several plants of this, I shall keep one under glass next winter as an
insurance policy. Indeed, unless they've grown a great deal between now &
winter I'll probably keep all of them under glass. I think it might be best
if it's put on some fair amount of growth and some well-hardened wood before
I experiment.
I can quite understand that it might be regarded as rather common in its
native habitat, but I can assure you that it's a pretty uncommon plant in UK
gardens. Unless I've been keeping my eyes shut these last decades, but
somehow I don't think so!
