We have zillions of the local unnamed variety multiplying
profusely for years both in full sun and semi or light
shade. The bulbs do work themselves to the surface and bake in the
sun. Some have been included in flowerbeds and get some water during the
summer and others are 'in the wild' and don't get any water at all. These,
needless to say, get walked on all the time since their off+white color is very
stone-like. Both categories flower profusely every September irrespective
of treatment. The only difference II have noticed is that the foliage of
the watered ones lasts longer.
Last year I ordered a few 'Johannesburg' from Bulb'Argence
and grew them in a pot to see the difference. Their color was indeed much
much deeper. I also got their 'White Queen' which is slightly
perfumed.
