Termites vs plants

It appears that my home needs to be tented to rid it of the ubiquitous termites that infest all wood materials here in Southern California. The inspector told me to expect to lose some of the plants nearest the house. To be honest, my first thought was "cool! I'll get to plant something new!" and then I realized that some of my favorites are right up against the house.
So, I wonder this -- have any of you had your house tented and did you really lose plants?
Are there any ways of protecting plants from the treatment?
Does the gas they use kill the plants or is it the heat that is generated in the process that kills the plants?
Are some plants more susceptible than others?
Anything else we should know about plants or about anything else before treatment?
