All penstemons should be dead headed, unless you are attempting to collect
seed. Deadheading will prevent the plant from putting energy into
seedmaking that it might otherwise use to stay alive and strong in your
garden for another year. Many penstemon species are rather shortlived
anyway, so it is good to take cuttings. Some of my penstemons I deadhead
for 2-3 years and then just let them go to seed on the 3rd year so I can
start anew with fresh seedlings.
