RE: Lychnis--Why Lamp Flowers?

Title: RE: Lychnis--Why Lamp Flowers?

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to add a note on the use of plant parts as wicks. I've tried using the calyx of Ballota acetabulosa in this way. They are shaped like tiny shuttlecocks, and it's the flared end that sits on the oil, with the pointed base. It is possible to get a small flame going and for it to remain alight. If I had some Lychnis in the garden I'd be experimenting now with various bits in a dish of olive oil...
