HELP WITH PLANT I.D.

I've been shown a shrub that I haven't a clue as to
its identity.

No flowers at this time although I was told it had
"clusters of small flowers".

Large unright shrub, maybe 6 feet tall and not quite
as wide. Although recent serious pruning may have
given it an unnatural size; it looked like a lot of
new fresh growth.

Large leaves, somewhat rounded, finely scalloped
(crenate more than crenulate), 6 inches across. Thin,
oh-so-slightly hairy. Stems almost succulent looking,
bronzy-reddish, thick. Plant is densely leafy.

I'm not sure it's "Mediterranean" in origin but it
looks somewhat like a very neat Greyia (although I'm
sure it is not).

Something tells me this is some old-timey thing rather
than some new exotic (it is planted in a VERY OLD part
of town). For those of you in the Santa Maria/Orcutt
area, I'll give you the address.

Thanks for any help,
Joe
