Grevillea redux

The University of California at Santa Cruz Arboretum, which has the largest collection of Aussie plants outside Oz, has proved that grevilleas on their own roots thrive in our climate. Many Australian botanists who visit say the plants are larger and look just fine here. One of the keys to their success is planting them in the autumn rather than any other time of the year. Once established they can tolerate other plants near them that need some water. I use drip system in my garden, and I have never lost any of them because they were near water in the hot summer. Some of the new hybrids are really spectacular bloomers.
It is very hard to convince landscape designers of their superb qualities. But where they have been used in public places, they have been a big success.
