Thanks for that. I tracked down the book which is published by David &
Charles, a UK publishing house. Ian Cooke also has an informative website in
which the cultural advice is UK climate orientated. The answer to my
question about lifting or not is apparently - it's a gamble! I've never been
very lucky gambling in the past, I guess.

Tristam, I suggest you get ahold of The Gardener's Guide to Growing
Cannas by Ian Cooke. The back cover of the book say that he holds the
UK National Canna Collection. The book, which is published by Timber
Press in the US and probably has a UK partner, lists a kajillion
varieties with descriptions. I never use the cultural information
but it would most likely work for you.
