I grow Campsis grfl (and several others) here in the Languedoc where our summers are hotter & drier (esp this year) than yours and our winters probably colder. I would go for the south facing fence; Campsis have extensive & deep roots and I think it would be unnecessarily restricted in a pot. Maybe fleece it the first winter, and perhaps (depending on your soil) improve the drainage. Do contact me directly if you have further questions.

Hi, I am new to this group. I am attempting to create a Mediterranean-stylegarden in Crawley, West Sussex, near Gatwick Airport, South-East England. My first question is about where to plant my new Campsis grandiflora. I have a south-facing pergola between my kitchen and conservatory, but the Campsiswould need to go in a big pot for this situation. Do Campsis do well inpots? The alternative would be a south-facing fence, where I could plant it in the ground, but this site might not be so well protected from cold windsand frost. Any thoughts? Thanks, Caroline
