Re: in place of jasmine

Pelargonium tomentosum grows so monstrously large, I wouldn't recommend it
unless it really has room to spread and won't overwhelm smaller things around
it. For dry shade I really like a couple of other South African plants such as
Plectranthus neochilus, P. x 'Mona lavender', P. zuluensis, and Crassula
multicava. Each of these performs very well here in Berkeley/Oakland with just
once a month summer irrigation. Various of the Dianella species such as D.
intermedia and D. tasmanica also do very well in even deep shade.' Another of
the newer Dianella introductions that I would recommend is Dianella revoluta
'Baby Bliss' which is a dwarfer foliage plant with soft blue foliage. Another
plant I like to use for dry shade, but not a ground cover, is Neomarica
caerulea, which surprisingly has also done quite well with minimal summer water
for me. I also quite like various Carex species in drier shade such as Carex
divulsa, C. morrowii 'Evergold', C. testacea and C. 'Sparkler'. Acorus
gramineus 'Ogon' is another useful dry shade plant ground cover. Other
relatively low water use plants for shade that I mass for color would include
various hardy bromeliads such as Aechmea caudata, A. kertesziae, A.gamosepala,
A. purpureorosea, A. nudicalis, and Neoregelia species such as N. compacta and
N. 'Bossa Nova'. All of these I locate in bright shade and provide them with
overhead microspray irrigation for just a minute or two every couple of days; so
they do get some irrigation frequently, but the amount being used is minimal.

Anyone got a dry growing groundcover to suggest in place of Jasmine in
a courtyard with morning sun? Pelargonium tomentosum comes to mind
for me ... can you suggest anything else?
