I'd agree with Katherine Pyle that Mermaid is a wonderful rose in a warmish
climate - to look at. But of all roses it has some of the fiercest hooked
thorns. My most unpleasant French gardening task is keeping it more or less
under control on the pigeonnier (former large dove cot, now a tall
two-storey annexe) of the holiday house we share in SW France with Helena's
brother.
