Noting your UCSD address, Nan, I thought you should know that the 
Arboretum at UCSC (University of California at Santa Cruz, for those of 
you outside our fine state) has a fine collection of South African 
Proteas (as well as of Australian members of the Proteaceae). You might 
want to get in touch with Brett Hall there who manages the garden. It's 
located on a hillside not far from the ocean-- very sandy soil. I've 
heard they had great trouble getting the plants going under proper 
sterile propagating conditions, but that the plants thrived outdoors.
