Re: Eucalyptus question.

Connie, from Gay Klok

Mary Townsend sent this via Suite101:
Gay I don't have any experience growing Eucalyptus neglecta (Omeo Gum) -
I've looked it up in my Eucalyptus book, which says its a small tree
with scattered and restricted distribution in the mountains of eastern
Victoria. In general Eucalyptus sp. are often able to survive fires by
various means eg.seed rain (they produce heaps of seed) and they can
resprout from lignotubers or epicormic buds after fire has passed.

Some Australian plants eg. Banksia and Acacia, need fires before they
will germinate. There has also been interesting research done at Kings
Park Botanic Garden in WA on smoke and germination of Aus. plants.
Stratification is necessary for some sp. of Eucalyptus to germinate, esp
sp. from cold areas. The Society for Growing Australian Plants has a web
page which Connie may find useful at:
                http://www.silo.riv.com.au/SGAP/seed.html

Sounds like her tree is going well to me, it has developed fruit, and
now she needs to keep an eye on the "gumnuts" to see when the valves are
opening,then collect the seed. Mary

If you want to know more Mary is an editor in Suite101 too. You will
find her answer under my article and discussions. Gay
