Roger:
The correct spelling for F. asafoetida still eludes me. I found four
different forms in the Web pages I searched, with and without hypens, and
with 1 or 2 `s'es:
F. asafoetida*
F. assafoetida
F. asa-foetida
F. assa-foetida*
*most popular forms
I wish the RGB Kew database would get to the species level. I can imagine
how busy it would be.
Anyway, I found these Web pages on nomenclature, which should be helpful for
resolving many problems:

Here is the text from the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature,
(Tokyo Code), Electronic version:
http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/iapt/nomenclature/code/tokyo-e/Contents.htm
It covers the naming of plants. I looked this up for an Alpine-L respondant
and came upon the comment on Salvia africana caerulea, which I thought you
should be apprised of.
