Instead of ferns...


Wendy - a possible alternative to the rhodo would be one of the bigger
correas - v. wind resistant, happy in at least dappled shade, handsome
foliage, and with the bonus of pretty fuchsia-ish flowers during
winter. 

There are corokias which would do a good job, as well. C.
buddleioides, for instance,  a  shapely, spreading evergreen with
starry yellow flowers for much of spring and summer and handsome
berries in autumn/winter (at least until the birds discover'em). It
seems pretty well impervious to wind.
