Tim, I'd go back to the protective gelatin layer as at least a partial
explanation. Of course, anything you spray on a plant leaf that has
nutrients in it will benefit the plant if provided in appropriate amounts,
but I don't see how that would help it protect itself from rust and
blackspot any better than would a foliar spray of fish emulsion or other
foliar fertilizer. Then again, this is all hypothetical since I've not
seen any research on any of this.
