I've tried all sorts of things, latest success was with Gymnocladus dioca
(Kentucky Coffee Tree) a legume with seeds about the size of marbles
and about as hard. I used an electric grinding wheel and in just a spot
on one side of the seed, removed the test
down to lighter colored material (the cotyledons I guess). I soaked the
seeds in water, changing ever day, until the water no longer discolored.
(The pigments are often germination inhibitors.)
I got about 25% germination in maybe three weeks or so.
