Chas,
I also have both these species growing in my garden,
and the gray leafed C. paniculata is the more common
of the two here in California, and also the hardier.
Sometimes this species will go deciduous here in our
area, other years it doesn't. Eventually the single
trunk will branch and become more tree like, but
starts off looking more like a palm. The trunk on
this can look quite furrowed, like a cork oak trunk.
If you planted the C. spicata in the ground, and gave
it average water, it could put on 6 feet of growth in
a year. This species has deep green foliage which is
similar in appearance to Trevesia, and the new foliage
is a deep copper color while young. My plant froze
back to the ground at 28F in 1998, but came back as a
multi trunk specimen which is now 6 feet tall, and
would most likely be even taller if it got more water
and fertilizer.
I think that both species are interesting, and
deserving of wider use. I have not seen any here in
the San Francisco bay area which have started to
branch, the biggest one I have seen is a 12 foot tall
C. paniculata at the Dry Garden Nursery in Oakland.
Gary Hammer of Desert to Jungle Nursery in Montebello,
Los Angeles sells both species, and Pitta Joffe's
book, The Gardener's Guide to South African Plants has
pictures of both.
