To Jan who wrote:

What I really should have refered to was the drawing of the walking human by Doryphorus,Roman copy of Greek original by Polyclitus etc...

Just a small correction, just because I am Greek - and to contribute to our general "cultivation"...

Doryphorus is not the name of a Roman sculptor but the name of a statue, the "Spearbearer" -(Dory-spear,phoros-bearer).

Polycleitos wrote a book concerning his new theory of proportions and  made this statue to illustrate his theory-there was a lot of discussion going on then about rhythmos and symmetria and how to reach perfection .  .

It was famous since Antiquity -more than fifty copies, and acclaimed as the epitome of Measure (to metron)or the Mean (to meson)-the equivalent of "sophrosyne" and the doctrine of "nothing to excess"- predominant values of 5th.century B.C Athens.
