Rebecca:

Salvia sclarea is a true monocarpic plant, dying at the end of the second
year.  Its cousin Salvia argentea is a true perennial.  In Denver, there are
some plants at least 20 years old of the latter.  Both plants thrive in
Mediterranean conditions.  Your plant sounds like the clone originally
collected by Jim and Jenny Archibald.
