Somehow, I missed most of this thread, but I still want to get my 2 
cents worth in.

This is exactly the point of Heidi Gildemeister's book on medit. 
gardening and the reason I purchased the book.  In her lectures, 
Heidi talks about watering plants only the first season or so to get 
them established and then allowing them to survive on ambient 
rainfall.  I suspect that she gets more rain than many of us do, but 
still her plant encyclopedia is very valuable for this purpose.
