Dear Jan,
I enjoyed very much 'visiting' your garden and so much more as it is
the
first one I visit through the web!( I'm a baby to the computer family...)
Indeed, the MGS quarters are at Sparoza , near
Athens , and I heard that next year's
G.Meeting will be held here. So we hope to see some of you in vivo...
In fact there is not much gardening tradition in Greece and most active
gardeners are foreigners living here or different kinds of "semi-Greeks"...(I
happen to be
one of the lucky few 'pure greek' ones (along with Cali Doxiadis who
I thank for introducing me to the group- hi Cali!).
But I am not a very old 'pure' gardener since I started 26 years
ago growing organically
all what was needed (even our goat's fodder!) to live romantically
,but very tiringly , in autarcy . It
is only these last few years that I became really familiar with a larger
ornamental plants palette).
Nevertheless, Greece possesses one of the richest floras -nearly
5800 native
species and subspecies of which around 1100 endemics, in wonderful
'natural gardens' in the wild.
And in many villages one can still find some delightfully and luxuriantly
planted small
courtyards with all the unpretentious charm of the 'vernacular'spirit.
Anyway, apart from a number of very interesting gardens indeed,
one can find treasures everywhere - as all plants lovers know...
I recently read < Photographing plants &gardens
> by
Clive Nichols , published in association with the RHS , by David &
Charles, 1994.
It got a Garden Writers Guild Book Award , if that means
something . Anyway I really learned a lot on
the subject so I thought this book might also interest some of
you .
Moreover the album has beautiful pictures !

Irini Ramphou
