Joe, even allowing for the fact that growth rates in California are bound to be much faster than here in Wales, I presume you want a hedge that is definitely of the small *and* informal type? I have one G.lanigera here, flowering right now, and it's... hmm, 'slow and steady' I think is the most appropriate phrase. But I admit that it's a good idea, even if it takes a while to come off. In any case, I'm all for gardeners using unusual plants for hedges - I have two wisterias planted as a hedge on top of my garden's front wall: I planted them 11 years ago, and it's only in the last year that they've really knitted together into one unit. I won't tell you how much pruning of lateral growths it's involved over a decade - a problem you won't have with the grevillea, that's for certain.
