Not mediteranean, but in the same class as maddeniis, are vireya rhododendrons - from the mountains of Indonesia, New Guinea, Borneo, and SE Asia. They like cool nights and cool winters as long as it doesn't freeze. Rather a rarity in the UK (you can see some at Kew and Edinburgh BG)- may be hard to find.
