I'm entering the discussion a little late amd might have deleted the odd
medit message along with the spam, so apologies if the following has
already been put forward. Linnaeus has the answer, as always.
Brugmansia was named after Sebald Justin Brugmans (1763-1819)
professor of natural history at Leiden. Compare Dahlia after Anders
Dahl (1751-1789), Hoya after Thomas Hoy (fl.1788-1809), Stokesia
after Jonathan Stokes (1755-1831) and Buddleia (Linnaeus spelt it
Buddleja) after Adam Buddle (1660-1715).
If Brugmans had been spelt Brugman, possibly then might have been
doubled in the naming and this might point to the origin of the
misspelling. Firther fascinating information can be had from W.T.
Stearn's Dictionary of Plant Names for Gardeners or for the brave, his
much larger tome Botanical Latin.
