"Braving the Elements" is the theme of this year's North American Rock Garden Society [NARGS] Western Winter Study Weekend, in Eugene, Oregon on March 5-7, 2004. This conference will focus, broadly, on the adaptations or environmental tolerances of rock garden and woodland plants, and include discussions of the "peri-Mediterranean" climate and soils of the Pacific Northwest. Speakers include the incomparable Panayoti Kelaidis, horticultural director of Denver Botanic Garden, and his wife Gwen; bulb expert John Lonsdale; plant ecologist Art Kruckeberg; horticulturalists Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne and David Mason, and several others. There will be plant sales and exhibits, art sales, and garden visits, including the O'Byrnes' Northwest Garden Nursery.
