Re: Sparmannia africana

In England they suggest this is hardy only down to
-3C, but it has come back from the roots after 24F/-5C
here in the San Francisco Bay Area. As it grows so
fast with adequate water, it may be okay as a dieback
to the ground tender perennial for you. Probably
looks best with some light shade and wind protection
to preserve the foliage intact, and blooms nearly year
round here under our generally mild conditions. They
get to be 20 feet tall here, where they are most
frequently encountered has huge hedges in Golden Gate
Park in San Francisco. I'd suggest planting against a
tall north wall with evergreen trees overhead that
admit winter sun, the ideal situation perhaps to best
show it off. Then again, you could always coppice a
Paulownia or Catalpa and achieve a similar effect of
large foliage on two plants that are certainly hardier
in central Spain.

David Feix, where I've been spared from frost for
another night, but it sure feels cold at 36F at night!
