Rose imports

Dufresne's info was most interesting.

For years I imported roses (for my own garden) from France, UK, Germany, and South Africa. Not a lot in each year but cumulatively about 100 plants are in my garden from those imports. It was easy then (once you got the plants) to keep them in a special place so the Ag people could inspect during their 2 year probation before transferring them to the regular garden. The major problem was getting them before they died because of failure of the airport holding area to inform me when they were there - the post office taking forever to send them on. I was able to pay an agent in NY to forward them but there was no one in SF who did the same thing. So I lost a lot of money, time, effort.
When the rules changed about ten years ago, it was simply too difficult to continue. We spent years trying to convince the USDA that roses from NZ and Australia were not diseased or suffering from rose wilt (I have visited scores of rose nurseries in both countries and no one ever heard of the problems). We are just about to have them rescind the rules they made back in the 1940s. So I do not think there is much hope that the situation for rose growers ( individuals) would improve. But maybe you will hear of something to change my mind. I hope so. Bill Grant, coastal California
