| In our area, where much of the natural landscape is sloped, it is important to provide some kind of mulch to keep the seeds from washing away. We usually recommend starting seeds in small piles of gravel. This works well for most natives. If this is not an option, be sure the ground is roughed up. We usually sow poppy seeds (and almost all all other seeds) in early fall right after the first rain.
