another plant ID question

The salvia question reminded me that I've been meaning to ID a plant I've seen in a front yard (suburbia, SF bay area south of SF). The leaves are large, at least 8 inches, and look like large eggplant leaves, green with a purple cast. The shrub itself looks like it's at least 5-6 ft. high and 6-8 ft. wide. I haven't had my camera when I've ridden past it in the daytime.
