Re: what experience taught you that your climate was different?


Here in Victoria, British Columbia, before local books were published, we gardened according to English gardening books.  They seemed to work well for us, until I read in one of them that one should not water one's vegetable garden.  I stopped using that book, because that was obviously impossible advice to follow.  It was years before I discovered that England gets summer rain, which explained it.

Oh, and the difficulty I have growing Japanese plants?  Spending a year in Japan helped me understand why.  Green grass in summer, brown grass all winter, people drying fruits and vegetables outside in winter (the most imaginative was produce tied to a bicycle which was wheeled out into the sunshine each day)
