Here in Victoria, British Columbia, before local books were published, we gardened according to English gardening books. They seemed to work well for us, until I read in one of them that one should not water one's vegetable garden. I stopped using that book, because that was obviously impossible advice to follow. It was years before I discovered that England gets summer rain, which explained it.
Oh, and the difficulty I have growing Japanese plants? Spending a year in Japan helped me understand why. Green grass in summer, brown grass all winter, people drying fruits and vegetables outside in winter (the most imaginative was produce tied to a bicycle which was wheeled out into the sunshine each day)
