Thanks to all the clarifications of salvia scabiosifolia. I suspect that
some people who replied do not usually post so it was good to bring some of
you out of the woods.
Now the trouble is I have two different explanations. The plant I have
seems to agree with Flora Europea. Which is correct?
Flora Europea Volume 3
S. scabiosifolia Lam.
Herb 20-50 cm, woody at base. Stems much-branched, ascending, patent-villous,
eglandular. Leaves, pinnate or pinnatisect, petiolate, with many pairs of
linear or oblong lateral segments and a larger terminal segment.
Verticillasters with 6-10 flowers. Calyx 10-15 mm, accrescent. Corolla 25-30
mm, violet-blue or violet. Krym (Crimea) and N. Bulgaria.
Jelitto & Schacht page 571 has the following information on Salvia
scabiosifolia:
"NE. Bulgaria, S. Russia. Crimea. Stems woody, often reddish at the
base, 30 cm high, procumbent-ascending in a loose clump, well-branched,
softly white hairy to woolly, as are the closely-spaced leaves. Leaves
pinnate, with 3-8 pairs of linear leaflets, or deeply pinnate-lobed,
lobes linear-oblong. Inflorescences racemose with 4-6 flowered whorls,
flowers large, white, pink-blushed, upper lip pubescent, lower lip
4-lobed sinuate. Attractive, bushy growing species for the larg rock
or natural garden. Zone 6(5)."
Index of Garden Plants by Mark Griffiths says "white, flecked violet to
purple, summer."
Is anyone growing the pink blushed white?
