Visit the quail Botanical Gardens in north-east San Diego county (off
Hwy 15, Escondido area; consult a tourbook for exact directions) and
Balboa Park just outside of downtown (off of Hwy 163) for
water-gardens, a botanical garden, Japanese garden, rose garden (which
may still be in bloom, you know) and tropical plants all over.
The San Diego Zoo (a must-see anyway) has a tremendous collection of
all kinds of plants in its exhibits. The Wild Animal Park has many
garden areas to choose from; see
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/Zoo/collection.html#plants
and
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/Wild/gardens.html.
I've heard San Marcos Growers is a good nursery, although I haven't
been there myself.
Enjoy your stay!
