On the central coast of California Romneya coulteri grows with great abandon.
I cut it back to the ground two weeks ago (end of Nov.) only because it gets
rather discolored in winter. It gets no fertilizer nor does it get summer
water.
Heirloom Roses in Oregon may have Rosa banksiae 'Lutescens' in the future. I
believe they have the mother plant now. Would we have to rose rustle if we
went to Tombstone? I have the single white banksiae growing in the
garden--some bloom now.
In my opinion, the best ceanothus for espalier is Gloire de Versailles. It is
available from Forest Farm in Oregon. It has big medium blue flowers and
continues to bloom all summer. It is supposed to be deciduous but keeps its
leaves here.
Do you think the Dietes with bronze leaves and cream flowers is available in
the U.S.? Such leaves would be useful in the garden.
Thanks, Randy, for the info on S. dombeyi. Can you tell me if it is possible
to grow any Dasylirions on the central coast? I know I will have a hard time
acquiring one but if I do I don't want to kill it.
Sue, I remember your visit well. Did you have any luck with the white form of
Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica?
