Watsonias actually enjoy disturbance. An old clump will flower better if
broken up after 3-4 years. This of course is no easy task and a stout
shovel and/or fork will be necessary. Most Watsonia's are summer diciduous
and so moving a growing clump could certainly induce dormancy. The
evergreen varieties will also be temporarily slowed by dividing and moving
but will be much happier for it. Watsonia's are fairly hardy, maybe not in
Vermont but probaly OK in most of Oregon. Plants that are floppy in
containers may need a faster draining mix (I use 60% sand in mine) and a
deeper pot. All of my Watsonia's are in leaf now their foliage is very
erect. Of course the light is stronger here in So Cal than up north and
that also makes a big difference.
