Here, though Seattle is not Meditarranean by a long shot, there is some
activity. A few roses still manage to bloom. I got my first blooms of
Lonicera fragrantissima today, and Cyclamen coum is loaded with buds that
should start opening any time. Soon there will be winter aconite,
Sarcococcas, witch hazels, and Helleborus orientalis. Meanwhile, the
Cerinthes are putting on some size - Cerinthe major purpurascens is about
9" tall and C. retorta (at least the ones that haven't turned into slug
food) are about 6 inches. They are quite hardy and handled several days
of dry 15 degrees and strong winds last year. Ditto for Tetragonolobus
purpureus ("asparagus pea") which I enjoyed in Greece several years ago.
Most of my gardening friends here have this uneasy feeling though that we
are in for a nasty freeze this year down to 5 or 6 sometime this winter.
Probably because it hasn't happened in 5 years or so and we are getting
nervous! Well, we can always look upon it as another hardiness test.
Happy holidays to all,
Bob
