Barry -
Deborah (my wife) and I were sitting on the from step of our porch
during a brief sunny moment yesterday. Were both commented on how
beautiful the Echeveria collection (in pots) was looking since their
damage from hail the previous winter (it pits and scars the soft,
succulent leaves on some types) and that we should get some
protection up for this year in case of hail. Suddenly, the moderate
temperature changed to very cold so we went inside. Moments later,
from a still and rainless sky, there poured forth this hail!! I ran
for a bedsheet to throw quickly over the railing behind these plants
to shield them from the freak hail. Moments after I was able to
place this protection, all was calm and the sun again returned. But
my children did have fun with the modest amount of hailstones that
were collected by the sheet!! Sheesh!!
Since then, the weather has continued to change rapidly from sun to
rain, but I have not observed any more hail. Since our weather
advances right off the Pacific Ocean, and the winds have been very
high, these weather systems have rapidly come and gone. We have yet
to experience any of the true 'El Nino' storms as they have in the
southern part of the California, which has had severe flooding and
other damage. But the large amount of rain did bring down a
beautiful Stone Pine (Pinus pinea)in the public park next door, one
of many which sheltered the 'wedding site' of the Rose Garden.
