If I remember rightly, that species tends to bleed sap badly when roots or
stems are cut or damaged during active growth. If they were my plants, I
would put them out in the breezeway to force them to go dormant. Then I
would plant them in the spring just before they break dormancy.
AND I would keep them in the house right now, and wait for a relatiavely
warm spell to move them outside. As I write this (12/18/97), the forecast
is for near-freezing temperatures in the Bay Area for the next 2-3 nights.
