Tristan:
I have left a Salvia buchananii in a gallon pot out as an experiment, with
the same result that you got. However, after the fourth or fifth frost, it
started to wilt. I would not leave it out for long under winter conditions.
S. guaranitica is reliably hardy in USDA zone 6, and I have overwintered S.
involucrata last year in Greensboro (USDA zone 7). Both have swollen
rhizomes, and mulching will help. Some of the forms of S. puberula, a close
relative of S. involucrata, are reliably hardy in zone 7.
